Michael Fequiere (pronounced fay-key-air) is an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker from Brooklyn. In 2024 (airing 2025), he co-directed and co-produced a short documentary for PBS/Nature/Atlas Obscura’s Untold Earth series. Michael also recently worked as a writer and producer on the ESPN+ docuseries Skin in the Game, which explored racism in sports. From 2017-2024, he worked full-time as a director for CNN’s Great Big Story and then Amazon, directing and producing over 40 short documentaries. In 2020, Michael won an Emmy for his work on a Great Big Story series entitled “The Brave.” Michael’s 2017 independent short documentary KOJO, a film about jazz drumming prodigy Kojo Roney, was selected by numerous film festivals worldwide, including Toronto International Film Festival, AFI Docs, CPH-DOX, IDFA, and BAM. With KOJO, Michael won the FOX Inclusion Emerging Artist Award at Blackstar. In 2013, he teamed up with Austrian body-painter Neil Curtis and directed him in the provocative short documentary Replace Clothes with Paint. Michael also wrote and directed a short sci-fi thriller, Traum (2011), which was featured on Shadow & Act, a popular website dedicated to content about Africa and its global diaspora. He has also directed branded content for Townsquare Media for clients including Toyota, Boost Mobile, and Gevalia, featuring artists Janelle Monae, Kendrick Lamar, Nipsey Hussle, Cardi-B and more. Michael is currently directing A Good Man, his first feature-length documentary, a personal story about himself and his family. He is a recipient of the Gotham/HBO True Stories Fund (2019) and participated in Black Public Media’s 360 Incubator Lab (2019).
